Winter holidays are approaching – and right in the middle of them are the Zittau Mountains.
Snow-covered paths lead to scenic viewpoints, striking sandstone cliffs rise out of the forests, and small villages invite visitors to discover their crafts, culinary delights and history.
In keeping with this, the Zittau narrow-gauge railway will once again be running two trains a day during the low season from 31 January to 22 February due to the winter holidays in Saxony and neighbouring federal states.
During this period, the first train departs daily at 8:47 a.m. and commutes between Zittau, Kurort Jonsdorf and Kurort Oybin as the so-called ‘Gebirgspendel’ (mountain shuttle). The journey takes passengers through the picturesque mountain routes of the Zittau Mountains and offers a varied travel experience thanks to the change of direction at Bertsdorf station. The last return journey from Kurort Jonsdorf is at 4:08 p.m., allowing passengers to enjoy a whole winter’s day in the region.
The second train, the ‘Oybinpendel’, departs daily at 9:09 a.m. from Zittau and runs a total of four times a day on the section to Kurort Oybin. This train is particularly popular because of its dining car, which offers regional culinary delicacies.
A special highlight awaits guests at Bertsdorf station: here you can experience the double departure of two trains. Every day at 09:46, 11:46 a.m., 1:46 p.m. and 3:46 p.m., the trains leave the station almost simultaneously in the direction of Kurort Jonsdorf and Kurort Oybin – an impressive spectacle for railway enthusiasts, photographers and families.

At 5:28 p.m., the mountain shuttle leaves Kurort Oybin as the last train of the day and returns to Zittau.
Those who want to end their trip on a leisurely note can visit the steam train café at Kurort Oybin station. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and invites visitors to linger in its pleasant atmosphere.
The Zittau narrow-gauge railway looks forward to welcoming numerous visitors to the Zittau Mountains during the winter holidays.
